...appendix does "serve to seed" the gut again of its normal bacterial flora after a wash out by severe diarrhoea and dysentery. Appendix retains protected some of the bacterial flora in the side stream space; lymphoid tissues further protect from other insults.

P.S. Like a "little curd" (joran in Hindi)  containing Lactobacillus is needed for fermenting and turning warm milk into curd overnight.
